Marsh Serlin
Midwest Region Chair
As founder and CEO of United Scrap Metal, Inc., Marsha Serlin has steered the Chicago company to a leading position in the industry. Ms. Serlin's concept for a recycling company grew out of necessity as she found herself financially responsible for her young family in 1978. Today, United Scrap employs more than 200 people and is recognized as one of the industry's most energetic and innovative enterprises. Crain's Chicago Business has listed United Scrap among the city's "Largest Privately Held Companies" and "50 Fastest Growing Companies." It has been an Inc. "500 Award" winner, one of Chicago's "101 Best and Brightest Companies to Work For" and a Mass Mutual "National Family Business of the Year."
Ms. Serlin herself has been profiled in publications such as The New York Times, Forbes, Fortune Small Business, PINK Magazine, Chicago Tribune, Crain's Chicago Business, Worth Magazine, USA Today, Womenswire.com, and more. She has appeared on ABC, CBS, CNN, CNBC and Oprah. In 2008 alone, her accolades included Entrepreneur magazine's "Top 20 Women Nationwide," the Anti-Defamation League "Women of Achievement Award," The Committee of 200 "Luminary Award," and Arnstein & Lehr's "Woman of Vision Award."
Ms. Serlin's commitment to helping other women pave their own paths to business success led her to join C200 in 2002. Today, she is on the organization's Governing Board and Membership Committee, and serves as Midwest Region chair. She also holds board positions with After School Matters, Children at the Crossroads Foundation, the United Way and the Illinois Manufacturing Association. She is a member of The Chicago Network, The Economic Club of Chicago, Blue Ribbon Council for Junior Achievement and the National Women's Business Council. In 2000, Ms. Serlin was appointed to the Illinois Task Force on Recycling by then-Governor Ryan.
